????️ Mandatory Elements of a Wine Label (imported into the EU)
- Product name – “wine,” “sparkling wine,” etc.
- Origin – country and region of production.
- Alcohol content – in % by volume.
- Net quantity – volume in liters/milliliters.
- Identification of producer/importer – name and address.
- Allergens – e.g., “contains sulfites.”
- Energy value – mandatory since December 8, 2023.
- List of ingredients – also mandatory since 2023.
- Lot number – for traceability.
- Language – information must be in a language understandable to consumers in the Member State where the wine is marketed.
???? New Rules (after 2023)
- Regulation (EU) 2021/2117 introduced the obligation to display energy value and list of ingredients.
- Producers can choose:
- To print everything directly on the physical label, or
- To show only energy value and allergens on the label, while providing the full list of ingredients via a QR code or URL.
- The online page with ingredients cannot contain marketing or advertising – only factual information.
- Wines produced before December 8, 2023, may still be sold with old labels until stocks are exhausted.
⚖️ Practical Notes for Importers
- Language compliance – e.g., in Bulgaria the label must be in Bulgarian.
- Checks by customs and food authorities – missing mandatory data can lead to refusal to place the product on the market.
- Flexibility via QR code – convenient way to avoid overcrowded labels, but accessibility and non-promotional content must be ensured.
